MODULE 6 — Electronic Configuration of Elements


INTRODUCTION

नमस्कार विद्यार्थियों!
आज हम Module 6 में Electronic Configuration की दुनिया को बहुत आसान तरीके से समझेंगे।
इस module में आप सीखेंगे:

1️⃣ Normal electronic configurations
2️⃣ Anomalous configurations
3️⃣ Half-filled & fully-filled orbital stability
4️⃣ Exchange energy concept
5️⃣ Relative energies of atomic orbitals

यह module chemistry में सबसे ज्यादा पूछे जाने वाले concepts में से एक है।
चलिए शुरू करते हैं!

PART 1 – NORMAL ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATIONS

Definition

किसी atom में electrons orbitals में किस क्रम से भरते हैं, उसे उसकी Electronic Configuration कहते हैं।

यह तीन fundamental rules से निर्धारित होती है:

1) Aufbau Principle

Electrons पहले कम energy वाले orbital में भरते हैं।
Order:
1s → 2s → 2p → 3s → 3p → 4s → 3d → 4p …

2) Hund’s Rule

Same-energy वाले orbitals में electrons पहले single-single भरते हैं (parallel spin)।
इससे repulsion कम होता है।

3) Pauli’s Exclusion Principle

एक orbital में अधिकतम 2 electrons हो सकते हैं → opposit spin के साथ।

Example 1: Oxygen (Z = 8)

Electronic configuration:
1s² 2s² 2p⁴

p-orbitals में filling:
px ↑
py ↑
pz ↑↓

Example 2: Magnesium (Z = 12)**

Mg = 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s²

PART 2 – ANOMALOUS CONFIGURATIONS

कुछ elements Aufbau rule को follow नहीं करते।
ये exceptions होते हैं और इन्हें anomalous configurations कहते हैं।

Reason:

ये atoms अपनी stability बढ़ाने के लिए electrons को rearrange कर लेते हैं।

सबसे बड़ी वजहें:
Half-filled stability (d⁵, p³, f⁷)
Fully-filled stability (d¹⁰, p⁶)
High exchange energy

Example 1: Chromium (Cr, Z = 24)**

Expected:

[Ar] 4s² 3d⁴

Actual:

[Ar] 4s¹ 3d⁵

क्यों?
क्योंकि d⁵ half-filled बहुत stable होता है।

Example 2: Copper (Cu, Z = 29)**

Expected:

[Ar] 4s² 3d⁹

Actual:

[Ar] 4s¹ 3d¹⁰

क्यों?
क्योंकि d¹⁰ fully-filled बहुत stable होता है।

Example 3: Molybdenum (Mo)

Actual: [Kr] 5s¹ 4d⁵

Example 4: Silver (Ag)

Actual: [Kr] 5s¹ 4d¹⁰

PART 3 – HALF-FILLED & FULLY-FILLED ORBITAL STABILITY

Why are these stable?

1️⃣ Symmetry – symmetrical arrangement energy कम करता है।
2️⃣ Exchange energy – parallel spins अधिक exchanges allow करते हैं।
3️⃣ Lower electron repulsion

Half-filled stable examples

  • p³ → N, P
  • d⁵ → Cr, Mo
  • f⁷ → Eu

Fully-filled stable examples

  • p⁶ → Ne, Ar
  • d¹⁰ → Cu, Ag, Au
  • f¹⁴ → Yb

PART 4 – EXCHANGE ENERGY CONCEPT

Definition

जब degenerate orbitals (जैसे 5 d-orbitals) में parallel spin electrons होते हैं,
तो वे आपस में अपनी positions “exchange” कर सकते हैं।
इस exchange से system की energy कम होती है।
→ कम energy = ज्यादा stability

इसलिए:

  • d⁵ → maximum exchange
  • d¹⁰ → also high stability

Example 1: Chromium

3d⁵ → 5 parallel electrons → maximum exchange → stable

Example 2: Copper

3d¹⁰ → completely filled → stable

PART 5 – RELATIVE ENERGIES OF ORBITALS

(Based on n + l rule)

Energy increases in the order:

1s
2s < 2p
3s < 3p
4s < 3d < 4p
5s < 4d < 5p
6s < 4f < 5d < 6p
7s < 5f < 6d


Neutral atoms में

4s का energy 3d से कम
→ इसलिए 4s पहले भरता है

Ions में (Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺)

3d की energy 4s से कम
→ इसलिए electrons पहले 4s से निकलते हैं।

Example 1: Fe (Z = 26)

Fe = [Ar] 4s² 3d⁶
Fe²⁺ = [Ar] 3d⁶

           Example 2: Mn (Z = 25)

Mn = [Ar] 4s² 3d⁵
Mn²⁺ = [Ar] 3d⁵ (half-filled)
